Coringa is loved for its high-quality climbing in an iconic setting. The route combines fun, technical movement with an accessible grading and length, making it a favorite for climbers looking to experience multi-pitch climbing on Sugarloaf.
Each pitch provides a consistent challange, encouraging climbers to refine technique, trust their feet, and move efficiently on the rock. Add to that the constant ocean views and unique perspective over Rio de Janeiro, and Coringa delivers a climb that feels both rewarding and memorable.
Finishing on the summit of Sugarloaf — and descending by cable car — makes the experience feel complete, blending real climbing with one of Rio’s most famous landmarks.

We meet at Praça General Tibúrcio, the main public square located at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain. From there, a short approach hike contouring along the mountain leads us to the base of the Coringa route.
Coringa is a classic 100-meter route divided into three consistent and engaging pitches. The climbing features small holds that emphasize good footwork, balance, and controlled movement. For climbers not accustomed to this style, Coringa can feel more demanding than its grade would suggest.
Because the route follows a direct, vertical line, Coringa allows for clear communication between the guide and the climber throughout the climb. This makes it particularly well suited for climbers who are new to multi-pitch climbing or looking to build confidence in this style of ascent.
Coringa also allows for easy retreat, an important factor for climbers new to longer routes. Unexpected challenges — such as fear of heights — can arise, and when they do, Coringa allows us to exit the route easily and continue via an alternative path up the mountain. This avoids the high level of commitment and pressure associated with many other climbing routes on Sugarloaf.
After completing Coringa, we continue toward the summit by linking up with the Costão hiking trail. Costão is a steep and scenic route that includes an additional short pitch of climbing and several excellent lookout points. We reach the Sugarloaf summit in approximately one hour.
After enjoying time at the top, we descend by cable car to Morro da Urca, followed by an easy forest trail back to our starting point.
